CS Duale: There was planned coup againt Ruto govt on June 25

Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Wednesday alleged there was a planned coup against President William Ruto's government on June 25, 2024.

This was the same day that saw the climax of Gen Z protests that led to the invasion of Parliament.

Speaking at Citizen TV, Duale alleged that the regime change coincided with intense protests by Gen Z youth, who stormed Parliament and caused significant damage.

"On June 25, there was a planned coup. There was a serious plan of a regime change," he said.

While Duale, who previously served as Defence Cabinet Secretary, refrained from directly implicating impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

"I cannot say anything about who was in charge because I am still in government. I am under the oath of Cabinet Collective Responsibility, but when I retire, I will write a book," he stated.

The Cabinet Secretary pointed to one of the charges against Gachagua during his impeachment process, which he claimed involved matters of national security.

"I have told you there was a coup, and that's why one of the charges against an impeachment motion is about national security. You need to read between the lines," Duale added.

The CS further criticised Gachagua for publicly disparaging National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director Noordin Haji, stating that certain institutions should be respected.

"There are certain institutions in our country we don't disparage and indict. Not only the national intelligence but also the security organs like the Kenya Defence Forces, the Judiciary, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions," he said.

Gachagua had previously held a press conference on June 27, 2024, where he accused the NIS chief of incompetence, suggesting he failed to inform Ruto about the widespread unpopularity of the 2024-2025 Finance Bill among citizens.

This particular bill sparked outrage, leading thousands of youths to protest and ultimately storm Parliament on June 25, 2024, prompting Ruto to withdraw the legislation.

Among the charges against Gachagua, accusations of undermining the work of the NIS were prominent.

The impeachment motion described his actions as "gross misconduct that is incompatible with the high calling and dignified status of the Office of the Deputy President and a member of the Cabinet and the National Security Council."
